Bernard Braun (24. 2. 1684 - 15. 2. 1738) - the renowned Austrian Baroque sculptor and woodcarver. He lived in Prague, where he founded the respected sculpture workshop.
Bernard Braun was born in the Austrian village of Sautens, craft sculpture was trained in Salzburg. On his artistic development was influenced works of Bernini and Michelangelo, who impressed him during his stay in Italy.
Already known as a sculptor around 1710 he settled in Prague, where he said the impressive sandstone sculpture of Sen Lutgardis, located on the Charles Bridge. (The original is now located in the lapidary of the National Museum, the bridge is decorated with copies).
In Bohemia consecutive Braun left a distinct mark, which helped a collaboration with the architect Franz Maximilian Kanka and other artists, among them the Czech Baroque painter Jan Christopher Fox. Together with the Kanka Braun participated in the decoration of the Czernin Palace at Prague Castle, the Church of St. Clement in Klementinum example Vrtbovsk garden or on the small side. Braun's work can be admired in many places outside of Prague. The most interesting galleries include allegorical statues on the terrace in front of the Kuks Hospice in Trutnov. In Braun's work was continued by his son Anthony, who took over the workshop even for his father's life.
