Sedlec Ossuary
In the middle of the cemetery in Sedlec stands the church of All Saints in the lower Chapel is unique ossuary. The decoration is made up almost entirely of human bones, which were originally half-blind monk compared to the pyramid. When after the Josephine Reforms bought the property Sedlec monastery Schwarzenberg, interior ossuary got its present form. The author of the unique decoration of human bones became woodcarver Frantisek Rint. A rarity is the local massive chandelier made of human bones, as well as chalices, crosses, monstrance or Schwarzenberg coat of arms. According to estimates, the decoration in Sedlec Ossuary consists of the remains of about 40,000 people.
Each day there will gather hundreds of skeletons who curiously rattle from place to place, staring in amazement at his tastefully matched peers. It sort of looks like the X-ray eternity.
This work was created to resemble transience of human life and the fact of death. Human bones symbolize the multitudes of those who stand before the throne of God, and nobody can add up. Death among people makes no difference.
MEMENTO MORI
