Jan Amos Comenius (March 28, 1592 - November 15, 1670) - Czech teacher, theologian and writer. The last bishop of the Unity of Brethren.
Jan Amos was born in southern Moravia in the Czech Brethren family of Martin Sege Comenius as the youngest of five children. The exact place where he came into the world, known not and Comenius himself in his extant writings did not state. Historians consider as the most likely Nivnice, but do not rule Brod and community chambers, according to which Comenius gets its name.
After his parents' death in 1604 he lived with his aunt in Strnici, where he began to attend school. Four years later he began studying Latin grammar school in Prerov and in 1611 he joined the college in Herborn, Germany. His favorite professor and the pattern became a German Protestant theologian and philosopher Johan Heinrich Alsted, who helped in the creation of Comenius general encyclopedia. In 1613, his first visit to Amsterdam and then completed a semester at the University of Heidelberg, next year he returned to Moravia to Perova, where he worked Brethren school.
In 1616, John Amos Comenius was ordained a preacher, and he went to Fulnek. There was a preacher of the Unity of Brethren pastor and school and church. In response to the increasing pressure of the Roman Catholic Church against the Protestants, wrote at the time, sharply polemical Discourse against Antichrist and his temptations. In it condemns Pope and the Jesuits as an incarnation of the Antichrist. Fulnek also wrote a book, Letters to Heaven , which was printed secretly. Fulnek Jan Amos also met his first wife, Magdalena Vizovsk.
After the Battle of White Mountain refused to convert to Catholicism, because he had to leave Fulnek and hide in various places in Moravia and Bohemia. The city soon plundered Spanish imperial soldiers faced Comenius hid their books at City Hall. While soldiers interested in other properties than literature, books, however, escaped the attention of Catholic missionaries who kept publicly burn the whole Comenius collected library, including his unfinished writings.
Sad time in his life but did not end. In 1622 he arrived in Fulnek plague, which killed Comenius wife and his two children. From that time come from the writings of The mournful , Deep Security and The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart.
Since 1624 Jan Amos worked in Brandys nad Orlici, where he married again. He and his wife Marie Dorota Cyrillov which, like his first wife came from Tebe, had three daughters and one son.
In 1628 Comenius leaving his family finally into exile. First settled in Polish Leszno, which became the asylum center by the members of the Unity of Brethren. There he became a bishop, and soon also the vice-chancellor gymnasium. Comenius deep thoughts of modernization and improvement of education. In forest was, for example, the Czech didactics and written in Latin Didactica magna . Works, which was a book Gate of Languages ??Unlocked , it became famous throughout Europe for non-Catholic, and soon began arriving from renowned universities. In 1641 he accepted an invitation of the English Parliament and also spoke before the Royal Academy of Sciences. It started its journey through various locations in Europe, where everywhere spread their ideas.
