Bohuslav Martin (8. 12. 1890 - 28. 8. 1959) - world-famous Czech composer, representative of the interwar avant-garde.
Bohuslav Martin was born in nearby shelf Svitav. Since childhood, growing up in a small apartment in the tower of the local church of St. James. His father because he held the position povnho, ??otherwise he worked as a shoemaker. The first experiments with composition Martin done already ten years old. His first teacher was the violin Polika tailor. At sixteen, then city councilor made such an impression that he has provided scholarship to the Conservatory, which he joined in 1906. The talented youngster too exemplary student and was not due to negligence had four years later from the University of leave. Only in 1912, after another private studio, passed the state exam violin. On the Police then taught for several years.
Since 1915, helped by the second violins of the Czech Philharmonic. From 1920 to 1923 it was a full member of the renowned file. In 1922 he became a pupil of Josef Suk, but the following year he went to Paris, where he received a three-month scholarship. His teacher there was a composer Albert Roussel. The main work of Bohuslav Martin in the prewar period became opera Julietta. In France, the composer lived until 1941. Due to events of the war he went with his wife Charlotte in the USA.
In the years 1942-1946 he taught at the Berkshire Music School, from 1948 he worked as a professor of music at Princeton University. Only the Atlantic began composing symphonies, whose productions soon seized when major American orchestras.
In Europe, Martin returned to in 1953. The home has been declared undesirable and therefore stayed in France, Italy and later in Switzerland. Tam worked great themes of world literature: the cantata The Epic of Gilgamesh, the prophecy of Isaiah, opera Greek Passion, for example, or lyrical works Opening of Wells or Bandit songs.
The composer's distinctive style is a unique synthesis of different musical influences, among which later was present folk song. Total composed a respectable 387 works, of which six symphonies.
Bohuslav Martin died in Liestal near Basel, and was buried on the grounds of his patron Paul Sacher. In 1979 his remains stored in native Police.
