The Powder Tower - one of the most important sights of Prague and Prague symbol. Late Gothic building is located close to the Municipal House at the Republic Square.
Construction Powder Tower began in 1475, when the foundation stone was laid King Vladislav Jagiello. The difficult task of initially planned master Vclav of lutic, three years later, but the construction management took over Czech architect Matthew Rejsek from Prostejov. The gate was then called New since built on the site of an older gate, which was part of the Old Town fortification. Today, his name owes gateway to the fact that since about 1715 it served as a gunpowder store.
The current appearance, however, Powder Gate acquired during the years 1878 to 1886, because the building remained unfinished for centuries. The completion of the financing is stopped being interested after King Vladislav in 1483 moved to Prague Castle. Until then, his court was located just near the gate. Even so neglected building suffered further damage in 1757, when Prague was besieged by Prussian troops.
Rebuilding the gate got to worry Czech architect and restorer Josef Mocker (1835-1899), which, among other capped Gothic corner turrets, niches, and also had to remove large clock tower. Sixty-five meter high monument since 2013, manages the City of Prague Museum.
