Antonn Langwell (13. 6. 1791 - 11. 6. 1837) - Czech artist, lithographer. He is best known as the creator of a paper model of Prague, where he worked from 1826 until his death in practice. A unique work covers about twenty square meters and captures about two thousand objects of historical center of Prague, many of which no longer exist. From 1962 to 1970 model was restored.
Antonn Langweil was born as the ninth child in the family brewer brewing in Postoloprty. That same year his father died and the family moved to relatives in Cesky Krumlov. In 1805, he began studying at grammar school in the Czech Budejovice, which after two years ended and began working in the castle. Education extended his three-year study by the Economic Institute for Swarzenbergs officials, which ended in 1812. From 1814-1818 he worked as a clerk in the Czech Krumlov. This relatively well paid, however austere work, however, was at odds with his artistic creation, therefore attempts luck at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Neither can not find satisfaction there, and so in 1819 he opened a lithographic workshop in Prague, having previously failed with a similar request in Krumlov. Competition and cumbersome bureaucracy, however, complicate the launch of the company to such an extent that Langwell device eventually sold printers Prague, Jan Ferdinand Schonfeld, who took over his unfinished orders. Langwell himself became an employee.
After Schnfeld's death in 1821, his position in the company deteriorated, he could not motivate low salary, so he volunteered to audition for a place servants of the University Library, which at the second attempt actually won. Thanks existential security could afford to return to a favorite painting. Gloried in particular the creation of miniature portraits.
To create a unique paper model of Prague inspired him relief plaster of Paris model, which in Prague palace Platz in 1826 exhibited Symphorien Caron (worked on it for 16 years). That same year, the Langwell embarked on painstaking work. Although later seriously ill and despite the fact that he did not receive significant financial support, continued modeling almost until his death. His work so appreciated to the next generation, which left a detailed form of the historical center of Prague, with many now nonexistent objects. Total Langwell created more than 2,000 buildings, its model is among the most notable exhibits of the Museum of the City of Prague.
