Master Paul of Levoca - brilliant carver, engraver and sculptor. Author largest Gothic wooden altar in the world.
Date of birth and youth of Paul of Levoca is shrouded in mystery. Due to the large fire in the town Levoa about it is preserved almost no written records. Link, who left behind, but still admire connoisseurs and art lovers from around the world.
In Levoca the master Pavel settled around 1500. He married the daughter of the local builders and magistrate Melchior Messinslohera-Polirera, in 1506 the then founded his own sculpture workshop. At that time also became a member Levoca Association Brotherhood of Corpus Christi, which associated prominent citizens of the city. Z minima preserved records of his life shows that he was also a wine merchant and owned large orchards.
His most famous creation is a wooden Gothic altar depicting the Last Supper located at the Church. Jacob in Levoca. Greatest work of its kind in the world champion Pavel completed in 1517. The precise workmanship altar decorated with gold accessories have a height of 18.62 meters. In 1952, the brothers Kotrbovm restored. Paul is the author of Levoa and other elements of the church interior.
His work, however, also found in other churches in the Slovak Republic. In 1516, was completed at the altar of St. George parish church in Spisk Saturday. I was on it shows the scene of the Last Supper.
