Friedrich Terrible (6. 5. 1879 - 12. 12. 1952) - Czech linguist and orientalist, who deciphered the Hittite language.
Frederick Terrible was born in & nbsp; Lysa nad Labem in & nbsp; the family Protestant pastor Vaclav Terrible. After finishing secondary school Cologne He joined in 1897 at the University of Vienna, where he studied Oriental. After graduating in & nbsp; 1901, won a one-year scholarship in & nbsp; Berlin. V & nbsp; at the time he published his first scientific text called Money Babylonians.
& nbsp; 1902 Frederick Terrible became an employee University of Vienna. After returning from & nbsp; first scientific expedition to Palestine, where involved in the translation of texts klnopisnch, was appointed university assistant professor of Semitic speech.
The attention of the world professional and public education on himself Terrible focused in the war in 1915, which published the first translated words and sentences cuneiform yet unknown language. Czech scientist proved that is the font of the Hittites, and that belongs to the family of Indo-European languages.
Do homeland returned with & nbsp; at the end of the First World War & nbsp; 1918 and soon was appointed Professor at Charles University in & nbsp; Prague, where he founded the Department of Oriental Studies dealing with the study klnopisu.
& nbsp; 1924 led the first expedition to the Czech Syria. Was successful: its members discovered the remains of Greek buildings, ancient ceramics and terracotta statuettes. A year later came another expedition, this time in Turkish Anatolia. V & nbsp; 1947 received the Frederick Terrible State Prize and five years later was appointed a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Died December 12, 1952. His remains were first deposited the evangelical cemetery in & nbsp; Lysa nad Labem, later transferred to the municipal cemetery. The original tombstone obelisk located in & nbsp; the local campus Protestant congregation. Frederick Terrible is considered the founder of science Hittitology field.
